Post-processing - my sand picture in photoshop
This photograph has been developed from one of my images taken in Cornwall of the sunlit sand and the patterns on the sand. I have been using my skills in Photoshop to develop this image in something looking more metallic and quite abstract as a result.
I converted the picture to black and white and then increased brightness and contrast. This brought out some of the patterns in the sand. I then adjusted the curves to create a shallow S shape and this has brought the highlights lighters and darkened the shadows and this has also helped to show the patterns and textures in the sand.
The last effect is a filter. I used the solaria filter and this has created the dark metallic look in the top right of the image. I am very pleased with this although it has not achieved a Keetman effect. I think this has too much speckled texture and I will try this once more with a photograph with less texture and more form.

This is the original image and this clearly shows the difference that has been achieved. The solarisation in the top right in quite confusing as it seems like the highlight of the original picture has been replaced by much darker areas but I am pleased with this and the slight mystery it gives the photograph.
creating dark and moody photos - inspired by brunelli
This is the original image that I have chosen to work on. I really like the strong lines created by the shadows of the fence and I also like the textures of the glass, railings and path.
I want to darken the image a lot and heighten the contrast to create a much more mysterious and spooky image. I have been inspired by Giacomo Brunelli and his views of the streets of London and have featured those in my research for this project. His use of dark and high contrast images coupled with unusual viewpoints give a moody view of London which is quite scary in many ways. His pictures seem to be underexposed and the darkness in the pictures gives the pictures a fear of the unknown and I see that darkness as something frightening - I don't know what is hidden in the dark parts of the pictures!
I also like the blur used by Brunelli although this is something I will not try as I want to keep the sharp lines of the shadows and textures on the path and grass.

This is the image after my process in Photoshop. I have converted the image to black and white and increased the red channel and this has darkened the green areas. I then reduced the brightness and increased the contrast to create the really dark (or black) areas and this is similar to Brunelli's approach to his images.
The last part of this involved me in cropping the bottom section of the photograph to remove my foot - I found this too distracting and it took away my attention form the mysterious feel of the photo.
Overall, I am pleased with this work and this is something that I want to experiment with further towards my final piece for this project. I will consider this in terms of the dark and mysterious feel but I will concentrate on keeping some colours in the photos and I will make a set of images - still looking down at the parts of the world we live in but rawly look at carefully.
