Arnold newman
Arnold Newman was an American photographer who was born in 1918 and died in 2006. His work was mainly portraits and there are examples (all favourites of mine) below. He worked in black and white film and he mainly photographed celebrities of the time.
His works seems to capture the likeness and the characters of the people he photographed and it seems like he had a connection with the people he photographed and their moods and personalities. In my work I hope I can capture the kind of person I am photographing as well as just showing a likeness of the people. I particularly like the portrait of the composer Igor Stravinsky at his piano. The photograph makes me think that the composer is a strong and confident person. I see this because of the strong shape created by the piano and the composition of the picture with the subject in the corner makes me think he is a confident and strong musician. I want to experiment with the setting for some portraits to see how this can influence the way the pictures are looked at. I also like the photograph showing the violinist Isaac Stern. The composition is filled by the face and detail of the violin. I like the way I can clearly see the textures and shape of the face and the contrast between the face and the violin. In my work I want to take some quite close-up portraits like this and introduce some accessories which might help describe and show things that are important to the person in the photograph. |
